When to Toss Out Beauty Products

October 17, 2017

Did you know that all of your beauty items have an expiration date? Yes, ALL OF THEM. I noticed myself buying into all the great and latest make-up coming out (it seems like it is never ending) and then I realized, there was no way I was actually going to use all this stuff before it expires. So... I took a good hard look at my inventory and then did some research on the subject, and was completely shocked at what I learned. I can't wait to purge my vanity and bathroom of all the stuff that has expired!!

Some key points in the video:

If you purchase an item, but don't intend on using it for some time - don't open it!! Open the product when you are ready to use it. Once the item is opened, oxygen mixes with the chemicals in the product which starts the clock on the expiration date.

Oxygen and water help bacteria to grow, which is why they are the enemies to your beauty products so it is very important to know when you first opened the product.

If the product has water in it (especially if water is the first ingredient), it will have a shorter shelf life. Same with natural products - they don't have preservatives in them to kill the bacteria so the shelf life is shorter.

Obviously, read the ingredients before you decide to toss as each product will be slightly different. Most times, there is an expiration note on the back of the product to help you decide how long to keep the item. BUT, if not, or if you have had an item for way too long, use this guide!!

As a bonus, not only do I go into detail on which items to toss and when but at the end of the video there are tips for becoming a more educated and practical consumer.

I had a lot of fun learning about this stuff and the science behind it all so if you have any questions, feel free to ask away in the comments!
